The deceptively simple title of this book covers a wide and increasingly important area of psychology. "Altered" states of awareness include those of dreaming, drug-induced perception, and that aspect of "bio-feedback" in which the individual uses special training to control his own state of awareness. Also within this area of study is the potential ability of man to combine his awareness with that of a machine ("bio-cybernetics").
Despite the significance of this area of psychobiology literature about it has not heretofore been available in a concise and well-ordered format. These 14 readings from SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN provide excellent background in the field. Professbr Teyler"s introductions review this material in the context of the latest information and discoveries. Altered States of Awareness will provide useful supplementary reading for courses in introductory psychology, psychobiology, perception, cognition, physiological psychology, and for other courses in the behavioral and biological sciences that cover aspects of its important subject matter.

Timothy J. TeylerI is a Research Associate in psychobiology at the School of Biological Sciences, University of California, Irvine. His B.S. (1964) is from Oregon State University and his Ph.D. (1968) from the University of Oregon Medical School. He was formerly Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Southern California and is presently a postdoctoral fellow of the National Institute of Mental Health.
